TUESDAY NOVEMBER 14, 2006-- NICE SAIL TO GATE AND BACK

Sunday night and monday it rained most of the day, but tuesday turned out to be a beautiful day in san francisco. We headed out in the early afternoon for a sail to the gate and back. Winds over the city were in the 7-10 knot range as we left port and raised full canvas....

...and watched LOLA motoring back into port with main still up.

Out on the bay, the winds were a bit stronger-- in the 10-12 knot range ....

....- a bit too much for full canvas, so we tacked toward the lee of pier 45, watched this sailboat pass flying jib only...

... and reefed the jib in the lighter wind area before tacking away to the west again. Behind us the city was gleaming in the strong sunshine.

This beautiful sailboat passed to starboard as we sailed west, and was looking great!

A couple of tacks took us past fort mason piers, and a bit later this smaller sailboat crossed our bow...

....and the GAMINE sailed downwind toward the northeast

A couple more tacks took us just to the east of blackaller buoy where we were able to take this delicious shot of the golden gate bridge and the marin headlands behind.

We tacked to head out the gate, passing Blacaller buoy to port, but then encountered a very large freighter wake, so quickly tacked back onto starboard tack to ride the wake and just sailed to the west of Tom Blackaller buoy.

After the largest portion of the wake passed us, we tacked toward the gate again and watched the red and white ferry steaming toward the gate.

Our favorite bridge was gleaming in the afternoon sun as we sailed out near midspan.

We then fell off toward the shore of the Marin headlands and eventually came about to head back inside, passing the cute lighthouse just inside the north tower.

We enjoyed a nice downwind sail in moderate breezes which freshened a bit after passing the Ft. Mason piers, and also the views of the city gleaming in the late sunshine.

We pulled in the jib while sailing past pier 39, and then headed into the wind to drop the main. After getting ready to land, we were motoring toward the marina entrance when these two coastie fast boats blasted out of the marina!

a beautiful 3 hours or so on our wonderful bay!
