FRIDAY 5 JAN 07-- AFTER SUNSET SAIL

Arrived at ANTICIPATION from Alameda at about 4:30 pm, a nice breeze was blowing, so we headed out for a sailing outing about 5 pm, with Damien-- a boat neighbor-- aboard.

The sunset was in bloom as we headed out of the marina.

We put up full canvas and sailed on close reach port tack to the north until we were at a point just south of Alcatraz, and then we tacked and headed for the gate on starboard tack close reach.

With ebb assist and a great breeze we were blasting toward the gate with a marmalade sunset behind the GGB-- probably making 9-10 knots over the ground.

We just ducked out the gate and then came about and headed back toward home port on broad reach port tack, now travelling much slower on this point of sail and hindered by the ebb current. The breeze softened as we passed Fort Mason, then shifted more into the north and freshened again. We sailed past home port and headed for the D-E span of the Bay Bridge, enjoying views of the financial district's well-lighted office buildings...

...like this one....

...and this one...

... and this one.

As we approached the D-E span, we enjoyed views of the Bay Bridge.

We sailed through the D-E span, and then came about, hardening in the sails as we did, and then blasting toward home port on close reack starboard tack. We were at pier 35 in no time, tacked to the north again and than came about and fell off the wind to back wind the jib to pull it in. then we sailed into the lee of pier 35 to douse the main.

The full moon was just coming up over the Berkeley hills as we headed into the marina.
