SATURDAY 30 DEC. 06-- FULL CANVAS BREEZE-- LOVELY SUNSET

Finally a day with some consistent breeze!

A moderate westerly was blowing when we left port in the early afternoon, and put out full canvas.

This small sailboat passed in front of us as we headed out into the central bay, but when we tacked to the west, we easily passed her.

A Catalina passed us, headed east, and you can see that the city is locked in haze.

On the westerly breeze, we were sailing straight toward the gate, and passing Aquatic Park when this sailboat, strangely flying a reefed main, passed to port.

Even more strangely, this Hunter was double-reefed... in such light winds?????

We sailed out the gate and enjoyed the fact that there was less haze surrounding it.

As we sailed out, this ketch was motorsailing back inside....

... as was this sloop.

We just ducked out and came about and headed right back inside since a quite substantial ebb was flowing, and as we crawled back inside against the ebb, this small sailboat was shooting the gate under spinnaker.

A smaller Ericson was headed for the gate...

HAZARDOUS WASTE had been headed for the gate, but then tacked and was on a course almost parallel to us, faster than us, and heading for Sausalito.

This center-cockpit sloop was headed for the gate, as we were headed for Raccoon Straits.

We easily overtook and passed this smaller saiboat headed in our same direction.

As we approached Raccoon Straits, this saiboat that motorsailed back into the bay earlier as we were shooting the gate, passed us again, heading toward the southwest.

This J24 had a large crew aboard but not doing much as we passed.

We could see that there was little wind in Raccoon Straits, so we headed back out into the central bay, and soon we spotted a sailboat that looked like Corto Maltese, Olivier's Ericson 34, headed our way.

We headed over for a rendezvous, and sure enough, Olivier and Brooke on Corto Maltese were heading back toward home port looking good!

After they passed, we fell off and headed north across the bay and noticed this saiboat under spinnaker headed east.

The sun was beginning to set into the cloud layers in the southwest sky as we sailed to the north.

We sailed to the northeast of Harding Rock buoy, watching the setting sun behind us...

.... and then gybed toward home port to watch the sundown through the gate.

The sun dropped into a dense cloud bank on the horizon....

.. and sundown was followed by a colorful sunset.

While sunset yellows and oranges persisted near the horizon, pinks dominated the clouds closer to us.

Eventually, brilliant sunset colors developed over the Presidio Hills.

As always, eventually the sunset began to fade toward the horizon.

City lights were brightening under dusky skies as we passed pier 45.

More magic time on our beautiful bay! and aren't we fortunate to be surrounded by it so often!
