SUNDAY 7 JAN 07-- NICE OUTING TO GATE AND BACK
Chris from Quincy came back to try again for an outing on ANTICIPATION with some actual wind for sailing, and two new crewmates also came, Kathy from SF, and Alex from Santa Clara. Kathy is a California native that just returned a year or so ago from living in Prague, the Czech Republic, and Alex, who hails originally from the Chicago area, moved out here about a year ago with his wife. Kathy had previously been sailing since she was in diapers, first with her Dad and then later on her own boats.

We left port about 1:15 pm, putting up full canvas and headed out into the central bay. A nice westerly breeze was fluttering the flags on the end of pier 39 as we passed. It was great to have some good sailing breeze!

A lovely Ericson 36 named MOLLY passed to port as we sailed on a starboard tack toward pier 45.

We tacked away and headed toward Alcatraz, enjoying full sunshine, and approached an Islander 36 sailing on starboard tack.

We tacked back onto starboard tack to race her, and soon passed her and left her several boat lenghts behind.

Chris was at the helm as we sailed westward on port tack.

We were beating toward the gate and somehow that Islander 36 managed to get ahead of us, perhaps due to less current near the cityfront.

A Hunter named RAGING OTTER passed astern, heading toward the cityfront.

We tacked toward the cityfront and a race boat named SORENA approached on port tack....

...and passed astern looking good!

As we continued beating toward the gate, we noticed a sailboat under spinnaker returning from the gate.

She gybed and headed our way with her asymmetrical spinnaker flying nicely.

She passed to starboard, looking good!

Kathy was at the helm as we approached the gate...

... and we just ducked out, then came about and headed back inside with Kathy still at the helm.

Chris took over the helm for a while as we sailed back toward home port.

A sailboat with a sail insignia that I've never seen before passed us, heading toward the gate.

Another sailboat named GUTE FAHRT crossed in front of us.

We gybed and sailed out to watch the sundown through the gate from a vantage point north of Alcatraz.

The sun was going down into a cloud bank on the horizon and changing shape as the astigmatic lens of the atmosphere acted on her.

A marmalade sunset followed the sundown, and we headed for home port.

City lights were brightening as we sailed past the weather side of Alcatraz and then fell off toward home port-- magic time on the bay!
As the breeze softened and with a waxing ebb current, we began motorsailing from a point opposite Aquatic Park. We doused the main near the marina entrance, and headed into port. Alex took off for home, but Chris and Kathy stayed for some wine and cheese and crackers in the salon of ANTICIPATION. Kathy said it was great to be back out on the water again after 14 years or so of being away from sailing. Chris was thrilled with the outing and seems likely to turn into a bit of a sailing fanatic himself in the future.
