TUESDAY 16 JAN 07-- CHILLY WITH HAZY SUNSHINE

A strong ebb was brewing for the afternoon and a negative tide in the midafternoon would prevent us from entering or exiting our slip without seriously dragging the keel in the mud due to the shallow water in the fairway between D and E docks. So we were happy to see a moderate northeasterly wind come up about 10:30 in the morning, and we headed out for a sail about 11:15.

Telegraph Hill was in hazy sunshine as we exited the marina and pulled up full main, and after passing the end of pier 35, we fell off and pulled out the jib to full.

We had enough headway to ghost along the cityfront against the waxing ebb current and watch the piers and the hazed in Telegraph Hill slide by.

We were sailing against the current toward the A-B span of the Bay Bridge, when this tractor tug steamed out of port and headed north.

Eventually the breeze shifted more into the north and we had to gradually shift course toward the D-E span of the Bay Bridge, and as we ghosted along, this Coast Guard fast boat blasted past, almost hidden by its spray.

The Bay Bridge was hazed out as well as we approached, fighting the stronger ebb current and just crawling eastward.

We managed to sail to within about 50 yards of the D-E span and then gave up and headed back toward home port, now blasting along on a faster point of sail with ebb current assist. We covered the distance back to the marina in about 1/4th the time fo our outbound trip.
