THURSDAY 8 MARCH 07-- 2 BRIDGE KISS

John Navas joined us for the first time for an afternoon sailing outing and we left port about 2:15 pm. We raised single-reefed main and put out moderate sized jib and headed out into the central bay with current in a moderate flood state. We headed out to the west on close reach port tack.

The flags on the end of pier 39 were fluttering strongly in a breeze of about 15 knots.

We sailed to the west for a while and then tacked into the lee of pier 45 and then tacked away to the west again. Way off in the northeast the ALMA was sailing to the northwest.

John was at the helm and the city was receding behind us.

We continued on to the west until the wind softened in the lee of the Marin Headlands, and then pulled out the jib to full, continued on for a while and then tacked to the south. We continued on this course until we were inside the south tower of the gate and then tacked to head out the gate between the south tower and midspan.

We sailed to near Kirby Cove outside the gate and then tacked to the south again to head out toward the ocean. About halfway to Pt. Bonita, the wind intensified and the ocean swells steepened and shapened, so we gave up on heading out onto the ocean and fell off toward Seacliff. After continuing on this course for a halm mile or so, we gybed and headed back toward the gate. Inside the gate, the breeze softened so we were sailing slowly to the north toward Angel Island.

A Hans Christian sailboat passed in front of us, heading east.

We gybed and headed east also, and after passing Alcatraz, we watched this J race boat heading toward the city on starboard tack.

As we headed toward the A-B span of the Bay Bridge, this Santa Cruz 50 passed to port, heading west with double-reefed main.

The financial district was mostly in shadow on the side viewed by us from the bay.

The Ferry Building also.

The sun was behind one of the apartment buildings adjacent the financial district, creating a halo effect.

The Bay Bridge was mostly in sunshine as we approached the A-B span.

After passing through the A-B span, we fell off and reefed the jib, and then came about and headed back to the northwest, eventually watching the beginning of the sundown after entering the central bay.

We sailed past the lee side of Alcatraz and enjoyed the sundown behind the island.

After passing Alcatraz, we saw a bit of sunset color over the Marin Headlands.

We sailed to the west until we were far enough to tack and sail past the weather side of Alcatraz, and then tacked and headed for home port as darkness was falling.
