MONDAY 7 MAY 07-- SUNSET SAIL TO GATE AND BACK

I spent all day Sunday with my daughter, doing some work at her newly-purchased condo in the city, so didn't get out for a sailing outing. Yesterday was another beautiful warm day in the city, so we headed out for a sunset sail a bit after 6 pm.

Winds were at about 15 knots out of the west as we left port, so we raised single-reefed main, and pulled out medium sized jib and headed out into the bay.

We soon caught up with and passed neighbor boat, PRIVATEER, who had motored out of port behind us and raised sails ahead of while motoring out. We did a video clip as we caught and passed her and you can find it on youtube.com at this url:

Way behind us a nice sailboat named AuDeo was heading north under full canvas.

Alcatraz was enjoying the warm temperatures and late sunshine....

...as were some of its visitors standing in the courtyard.

Far to the west, a large sailboat was crossing the bay.

After passing to the south of Harding Rock buoy, we tacked to the south toward the cityfront, as our buddy, ADVENTURE CAT, headed west behind us.

The city was enjoying the late sunshine.

We sailed to near the shore just west of the St. Francis Yacht Club, and then tacked toward the gate, passing this small Catalina heading east and looking great!

As we continued toward the gate, we were happy to see some windsurfers still scooting across the surface of the bay, like this one.

The ADVENTURE CAT was now sailing across the gate toward us.

Behind us, a female windsurfer was blasting toward the shore.

ADVENTURE CAT was heading out the gate near the south tower as we approached the gate.

We sailed out the gate just north of centerspan of the bridge, enjoying our view of it!

We sailed out a short ways and then came about and headed back inside, following the ADVENTURE CAT to head for home port.

For a while we were in the process of being sandwiched between this container ship that was steaming toward the gate in the inbound lane.....

...while this tanker was heading out the outbound lane and fortunately going slower so we had plenty of time to clear out of her path.

A nice looking sailboat was motorsailing inside the gate.

Ahead of us a sailboat was sailing across the bay toward Sausalito as the sun was going down.

The sun was dropping behind the Marin Headlands.

The cruise ship earlier tied up at pier 35 was now steaming out to sea as the sun was going down.

A golden sunset filled the sky over the headlands.

City lights were coming up as we passed Aquatic Park, and the magic of dusk grew as we continued toward home port, having gybed onto port tack while approaching the Ft. Mason piers due to the wind shift into the west.

The city was in part sun and shadow as we passed between pier 45 and pier 39.

We gybed back toward pier 39, pulling in the jib, and sailed past pier 39 where the flags were fluttering at about 5-7 knots.

Tim on CHEWINK was sailing into port as we approached pier 35.

We doused sails in the lee of pier 35 and readied ANTICIPATION for landing, then motored around pier 35 toward the marina entrance, enjoying the marmalade sunset over pier 39.

Another fabulous outing on our wonderful bay!
