THURSDAY 3 MAY 2007-- 2 BRIDGE KISS WITH 2 NEW MATES
Steve and Susie joined us for our thursday afternoon outing [more sfsailing.com contacts] and we left port a bit after 1:30 pm, raised single-reefed main, headed out into the central bay, gybed the main and pulled out the jib to full to head downwind toward the Bay Bridge.

Steve was at the helm as we sailed down the cityfront shore.

The Ferry Building and the financial district were enjoying hazy sunshine as we sailed to the southeast toward the A-B span of the bridge.

It was 2:05 as we passed the Ferry Building, so we were making pretty good headway with decent winds.

Off to port, a nice looking pocket cruiser was also heading for the Bay Bridge in strong sunshine.

We sailed under the A-B span, then reefed the jib and headed back under the bridge, sailing north in a northwest breeze and eventually passing in front of this motorsailor ketch after we had passed to the east of Alcatraz.

This smaller sailboat passed in front of us, looking to be uncrewed, but probably someone had gone below for something and locked down the helm as we sometimes do also.

It was becoming cold and overcast as we beat toward the gate against a westerly wind and flood current -- a light one, and susie was enjoying her first outing on the bay after a couple of years off to have a baby.

We approached the gate on starboard tack close reach, sailing to just inside the south tower and then tacking toward the gate with Adventure Cat creeping past us as we did so.

Steve was at the helm again as we shot the gate about midspan.
We just ducked out the gate and then came about and headed back inside, sailing downwind, pulling the jib out to full and making good headway with flood assist toward home port.

This nice and new looking sailboat came out of the SF marina and passed in front of us, heading north.

Aquatic Park and Russian Hill were in hazy sunshine as we sailed past.

Behind us the gate was overcast, with darker clouds gathering in the north bay.

The city was cloudy bright as we sailed between pier 45 and pier 39.

Flags on pier 39 were still fluttering in a breeze of about 20 knots as we sailed past.

We saw our first small flock of pelicans heading for the gate as we sailed past the east marina-- so nice to have them back for the season again.
We sailed behind pier 35 to douse the sails and get ready for landing, then motored into port, filled again with the pleasure of a great outing on our beautiful bay!
