FRIDAY, 3 AUGUST 07-- TO THE GATE AND BACK
We headed out of the marina about 10:30, hoping to catch the start of the Aldo Alessio Cup race that morning, but we were a bit too late to get to the starting area in time.

As we sailed west in a light breeze, this cutter-rigged sailboat motorsailed past, heading for the gate.

The flags on the end of pier 39 were fluttering modestly in a breeze of about 5-7 knots.

A coast guard helicopter passed, heading east and flying only a few hundred yards off the sea surface.

It soon turned around and was hovering over a coast guard patrol boat headed toward the gate.

A J24 race boat approached us sailing more off the wind.
Here's a video of the J24 approaching from our port side.
We had to fall off to avoid her colliding with us, even though, as the windward boat, she should have given us right of way and fallen off to pass behind us.
Here is a short video of her sailing beautifully just before we headed up again to resume our previous course.

Mt. Tam and Sausalito were enjoying hazy sunshine as we sailed westward toward the headlands.

A beautiful fog bank frosted the headlands ahead of us.

A lovely Beneteau passed us after we tacked toward the gate-- she was looking good!

The fog bank obscured the tops of the bridge towers.

As we sailed along the shore of Yellow Bluff, this Ericson sistership was heading in the opposite direction.

A small flock of pelicans was swooping over the surface of the sea.
We sailed to near the SF shore and then tacked out the gate against the flood current, just ducking out and then coming about and heading for home port, eventually passing this sailboat heading west and taking this video clip.
