FRIDAY, 18 OCT. 07-- RAINY SAIL TO GATE AND BACK
A light southerly wind was blowing in the mid-afternoon, so we decided to head our for a sail, hoping to sail to the gate and back before it started raining. The radar was showing some rain activity moving across the north bay, but nothing major heading for the central bay.

We left port about 4:30 with skies mostly overcast and a light wind blowing, and we were dressed in foul weather boots and pants in case it started raining.

As we entered the central bay and headed toward the gate, we noticed that PRIVATEER was heading for home port from the east.

The pier 39 flags were fluttering moderately in a breeze of around 5 knots as we passed.

A small flock of pelicans flew past, heading east.

Mt. Tam was completely socked in with mist or rain.

In the north we could see a faint rainbow.

The city was mostly overcast but the air was clear.

We were joined out there by a small sailboat sailing eastward along the southern shore of Alcatraz.

The charter sloop RUBY was hanging around by Alcatraz for some unknown reason.

Another small sailboat was crossing the bay toward the cityfront behind us as we continued toward the gate on port tack.

A lager tanker was heading out to sea in the deep water channel of the bay

The skies over the bay darkened, but parts of the Port of Oakland were still in sunshine.
Now it started raining lightly so we put on our foul weather coat, and we could no longer take any photos, but we did make it out the gate on that single port tack and then came about and headed back to home port, sailing in a dense mist that prevented us from seeing the shore for a while. It was good to get back into port and to shed foulies and go below out of the rain.
